Karen grew up in London before moving north to complete a History degree at Lancaster University. After graduating with a 2:(i) she worked and travelled in the USA and worked in the orphanages in Romania after the fall of Ceausescu. She trained to be a history teacher at Swansea University and moved back north to take up her first job in Whitehaven. An opportunity arose to teach in Tanzania, which she took, and worked in a secondary school on the Tanzania/Malawi border for just over a year before returning to Britain. She headed north again to take up the Head of History position at Heysham High and where she was promoted to Assistant Headteacher. She was Deputy Headteacher at Settlebeck for 8 years before accepting the position of Head teacher. In her spare time she enjoys baking and spending time outdoors whether that’s walking her two lurchers, working on her allotment or walking in the Lakes. She is currently trying to learn to play the piano.
